ALTHOUGH literary references are scattered throughout Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind it is important to view director Michel Gondry’s wacky film through the prism of Alexander Pope’s epic love poem Eloisa to Abelard from which the title is derived.

This film is essentially a love story, despite the use of science fiction as a plot device. And Clementine and Joel’s grand passion – just like that of their 18th-century counterparts – is constantly thwarted by a tussle between love and emotion, reason and logic.
