The setting of The Lovely Bones

The Lovely Bones takes place in the 1970s when people were more innocent and events like Susie’s murder were rare and shocking. Obviously there was no DNA testing which made it hard to catch murderers like Harvey.

The novel’s epigraph is from a passage in the novel when Jack Salmon describes the penguin’s life inside the snow globe: “Don’t worry Susie; he has a nice life. He’s trapped in a perfect world.” It is the snow globe that Alice Sebold uses as the setting for Susie’s heaven: a place of calm, a transparent but very separate world.
