We have briefly looked at the theme of grief in The Lovely Bones. Another theme to look at is that of love and acceptance. This doesn’t just mean love for Susie and the acceptance of her death. It is also love and acceptance of the way those around her react to the tragedy. The Salmon family allows the strong ties that bind them together to become chains. These chains are something that they each want to break in some way, so they can then run away. However, as the novel progresses they learn the truth and realise that it is only with the ties, not the chains, that they can begin again, renewed and ready to face life.
